10 QUESTIONS TO ASK HR

Congrats!!! You got the job!! Now you’re wondering about your workplace’s policies, don’t worry, I got you covered.

1. WHAT ARE YOUR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES?

You know the saying, if you never ask, you’ll never know, well that applies here and almost everywhere. Just ask your HR department what is expected of you and understand what they want you to contribute. That way, you can do your job right and efficiently.

2. IS THERE A 401(K) PLAN?

This isn’t just something “old” people have, it’s crucial you start yours ASAP. It can sound confusing at first but again, just ask HR questions, google it, or both.

3. HOW IS EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION MEASURED?

HR is not just there for disciplining employees. Most HR departments are actually integral parts of the workplace that function as a resource for their employees. So ask them and understand how they are measuring and keeping track of their employee satisfaction.

4. IS THERE A PERFORMANCE REVIEW POLICY?

Most places have this, so it’s super important to get familiar with yours. Once you’ve become familiar you can then do a better job and take advantage of how the system works

5. WHAT’S COVERED IN THE COMPANY HEALTH CARE PLAN?

Again, another overwhelming thing to get into but I can’t stress enough how important this is. Your HR is your BFF in this situation, go to them for everything you’re confused about. They will help you decipher the complex world of deductibles, in-network co-pays, and out of pocket costs.

6. WHAT DOES CAREER GROWTH LOOK LIKE WITHIN THE COMPANY?

HR can show you what might look like if you stay long term, so just ask them. Why? Well it’s important to know so you can set some goals. If you forget a lot, you can have them put it in writing and have that visible on your desk.

7. BESIDES HEALTH CARE, WHAT OTHER BENEFITS ARE PROVIDED?

QUESTIONS!!!! I mean, have you noticed questions are the best thing here, just ask your HR department what job perks you have on top of health care and a 401(k). Some jobs offer discounts to the movies, deals on car rentals, and gym membership reimbursements. Just ask.

8. CAN WE DISCUSS WORK ISSUES?

Being a young professional new to the business, it’s important to use your HR to figure out more about what you can and cannot do. If you go to HR with a problem, explain the situation and propose a solution, then wait for their feedback.

9. IS THERE A CONFLICT RESOLUTION SYSTEM IN PLACE?

Use HR to help resolve conflicts that may arise at work, such as manager issues or disagreements with your coworkers. Be professional about it, don’t approach HR with an attitude, just leave your emotions at the door. Stick to the facts of the situation instead of your feelings about it.

10. WILL OUR CONVERSATIONS BE CONFIDENTIAL?

Typically, you should feel comfortable asking HR just about anything. Your conversations should remain confidential when requested by an employee unless there is fear about the potential for retaliation.
