How to Style A Basic White Shirt
Hey guys, so I don’t normally write style/fashion blogs but I got the itch and so here we are. This isn’t going to be boring or filled with the obvious. I personally dislike posts that say things you already know like wear jewelry to spice up your outfit, like duh. I mean if you didn’t know that, I’m so glad you’re here today.
Let’s begin, so a white shirt can be soooooo fucking boring and truth be told, for a long time I didn’t wear them for that reason. I felt it was a waste of money and couldn’t fathom wasting space in my closet for a basic white shirt. Fast forward to a few years my beliefs have changed and now I am a huge believer in basics.
Back to Basics
Like most things, wearing something basic can be boring but if done right, it can be so chic and stylish. I noticed for a while I always bought shirts with patterns or some type of design. I thought this was what made my outfit stylish and truth be told after a while, and looking at my feed I was so over it. I felt it wasn’t matching where I am now in life. That’s the beauty of fashion, it’s always evolving and changing. Fashion morphs into something beyond just clothes, it’s how you felt that day, how you wanted people to feel about you. Anyway, at this point in my life, a basic minimal look with a twist is what I’m about.
How to style a white tee
Ok let’s get straight to the point, there are a few components and I won’t get into long details you’ll most likely skim through, I’ll try to make this short and sweet.
Steam your shirt
This might seem obvious but I see a lot of people wearing super wrinkly shirts and that just makes it look so bad and cheap. Steam it the night before or a few minutes before you’re going to wear it. That way it’s crisp and looks like a hundred bucks even though you spent like $50.00 at Zara.
Wear a skirt/shorts
I’ve found that either one of these is the perfect combo to make a basic white t-shirt look super cute. I like to go for a faux leather look or a semi-poofy skirt that’s loosely fitted.
Wear patterned Nylons
So like I said, wearing patterns or designs is not always the best idea when you’re going for super chic and minimal but that being said, when you’re wearing a basic white t-shirt, it’s almost a sin not to wear some kind of pattern. Rule of thumb is to make sure the pattern is subtle and not colorful. I wore polka dot nylons from Target and seriously it took my outfit from 0-100 so fast. The faux black leather shorts and black polka dots with the white t-shirt just went together so well.
Throw on a Newsboy Hat
This might scare some, but trust me, it truly adds to the outfit. I mean you could do without it but I would highly suggest you rock it. I wasn’t wearing my cute newsboy hat at first and felt something was just missing. Once I put it on, I knew the outfit was complete. Adding a cute newsboy hat is my favorite thing to do when styling a basic outfit. It elevates your look without adding too much.
Obviously, add gold jewelry.
Ok I know I said this was an obvious choice but in case you missed it the first time lol. Adding gold jewelry to a basic white t-shirt is like peanut butter and jelly. It goes so perfectly I don’t know how anyone can wear one without the other.
Don’t forget to add confidence
So many forget to add this to the look. I know firsthand it could be a little hard and intimidating especially if you’re experimenting with your look. It’s ok, that’s a good sign, you feel odd and the more you do it the better you feel. If it never feels good then maybe you’re not really dressing for yourself but for others. Remember this isn’t about what other people think, this is for you and you only. That’s why confidence is key, you have to rock the outfit you’re in.
As a licensed REALTOR® it can easily feel I have to change my style to fit the standard of what others assume a REALTOR® should dress like. I clearly don’t wear anything that shows my ass and if I’m showing houses, I do wear pants, slacks or a long skirt. That being said I am still a little edgier and that’s ok. It works for me and that’s because I am confident in it and my clients appreciate that, not to mention I’m a kick-ass REALTOR® lol.
So to end this already pretty long blog post, just wear what you want and try some of my tips and feel free to share what you came up with on Instagram, I’d love to see.
As always, thank you for reading, I appreciate you and your time.
xoxo
